La Famiglia Pirovano Barbera

Purchased at Whole Foods in Los AngelesThe Barbera grape.

Price - $9.99

Alcohol - 13%

I like the Barbera grape from Italy.  'Nuff said.

Pop and Pour

On the Nose - Stinky forest floor, plum, bing cherry

I'm not especially fond of this wine though.  It tastes like I am eating dirt.  I mean, it really has the flavors you would expect of fresh forest soil covered in pine needles, damp even.  It is silky and has flavors of ripe cherry as well.  It lacks some of the acid one would expect from a Barbera.  Maybe it will open up, but this smell and flavor is just very displeasing to me.  Too organic.

After an Hour

On the Nose - Stinky forest floor, spicy prunes, hint of red pepper, lurking cherries

Nope, I can't even really drink this.  I honestly didn't even want to finish reviewing it.

Summary - 75 points

This wine just makes me mad; I mean, who seriously wants to drink wine that tastes like smelly forest floor.  Where did all the fruit go?  There is more dirt flavor in here than fruit flavor.  I once opened a 1998 Shiraz from Australia that had been aged improperly (Not by me).  It was definitely aged; it had brown all around the edges, but it tasted like rotten banana and dirt.  This almost tastes like that.
